My ancestors did not enslave yours.

All four of my grandparents immigrated from Italy, so I’m pure Italian, but also white. My father was a jazz musician who often played with musicians who happened to be black, so I grew up in a tolerant home when it wasn’t popular. Growing up in America it seemed like blacks expected and received deferential treatment because their ancestors were enslaved by “my” ancestors. As a teenager I once walked through a cemetery with a friend, when we were spotted by a group of young black men. They chased us, throwing rocks- why? because we were white? Racism goes both ways. Now I have custody of my grandson, who is mixed. He is the most beautiful thing in my life.

Racism does go both ways and thank you for being brave enough to discuss it.

Yep. My ancestors on both sides converted to Mormonism and came out here, got hit with mobs, (kind of deservedly, I wish they’d have stayed put) and kicked out of the USA as pioneers to Salt Lake City.

Yet apparently they mysteriously also had slaves according to black people?? Worst we did was Not Give You The “Priesthood” for awhile, which is superstitious bull crap anyway.

…Italians certainlt were in the slave Trade. how do you know that yours did not participate?…you got proof?…it no real matter, jus say’in. You are one of many who are making that same statement with your six words and it is without real context…

…”it seems that Blacks expected and received preferential treatment beciase their ancestors were enslaved?”…can you explain that with some examples? While you’re at it maybe you can explain how White? people are so wrapped up in expected privilege and social preference. Is that because their ancestors were slavers?…did you know that Italians Immigrants were not considered to be White?
As a “Pure Italian White Man” you should read “5 Reasons why White Pride is always Racist” Salon, 1/9/15.

…it is written by White people who are conscious of the erroneous and created Race term White as well as it’s history and use in America. I find it interesting that whenever I ask “what exactly does White mean anyway?”…I never get an answer!

…you might want to broaden your cultural education so you can teach, understand and help your Grand child. Could be useful!

“…how White? people are so wrapped up in expected privilege and social preference.” Really? You want an answer to your question? I am white because of my skin color. I have no expectation of privilege or social preference. In God’s eyes we are all the same, regardless of skin color or any other distinctions.

…there is White the skin color and White the Social Race Construct that is at the root of the founding of America. Lines blurr!
