Once open-minded, inclusive parents start to act nervous, different when cross-racial crushes develop & kids hit puberty.

Some parents change around Junior High.

All of above to some degree. More “oversight” of kids’ interaction. No more jokes about crushes. Group plans no more 1on1.

The changes are subtle. To the point one might think oneself paranoid or overreacting. But kids *get* the cool-it message.

    I think there is a lot of truth to this. It can arise from race, ethnicity, religion, etc. A good friend of mine from high school, typical white rural Midwesterner, moved out to the Bay area and ended up marrying a Chinese American woman whose parents were firm that they wanted her to marry a Chinese man. Her parents barely speak to her and their and son-in-law anymore.
