My family originates in Ethiopia, and I am the first generation who was not born there. So what does that make me? I am the true definition of African American. My family is from Africa and I was born in America, thus making me an African American. When I tell people I’m ethiopian, they never know what I mean so I make it simple for myself by calling myself Black. Yet people also do not consider me black either. So I ask again what does that make me? I wasn’t born in Ethiopia so I can’t necessarily call myself a true ethiopian person. However my peers don’t consider me Black. Leaving me no where to check what race I am when asked in forms. I embrace my ethiopian side, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t sting a little when my African American peers don’t consider me one of them. Just because I know where I am from Africa shouldn’t make me an outcast.
