Why steal when you’re already looking.

Im a 22 year old African American male who lives in California. Whenever I enter a store, gas station, or even a movie theater. I feel an unwanted vibe as if I’m on the radar by all the managers and floor workers. A negative vibe as if I’m being looked at like about to steal an item. So i wrote my 6 words “why steal when you’re already looking” describing that vibe i always feel when i walk into a store.

I’m a white female, 23 years old, and I have actually been accused of stealing when I didn’t.
I’ve gotten looks in stores and people asking me to empty my pockets! I have been told to leave my backpack at the front of the store when I entered, when I did I saw that many other people, had their bags.. It doesn’t just happen to black people. Black people aren’t the only ones getting judged.

If that were the case, white people wouldn’t be in jail or ever convicted of a crime, or be the victim of police brutality, but there are LOTS of white people who get convicted of crimes all the time, even innocent white people, same applies to every race. There are black cops, is it racist if a black cop shoots a white people? What if a black cop shoots a black person and kills them? Is that racist too?

There are lots of hate crimes against whites, hispanics and Asians, but you never hear about those, it would be too racist to accuse a black person of a hate crime..

There are lots of racist people out there from every race!

Not everything that happens to black people by another race is racist.

That’s true. But, I think your response is overlooking the point. I agree that people of all races are subject to judgement/discrimination by others for whatever reason (i.e. people who judge others based on weight….which is another issue that is often not handled in the best way) However, the problem with responding to a statement like Michael’s with a reply like yours, overlooks the issues of racism and the problems that it causes everyday for people.

This is like when women attempt to discuss some of the issues they face and are bombarded with responses like, “Well men have issues too!”

Of course they do. But that isn’t the point. And, what you said was a very valid statement indeed — but not the point. And, unfortunately, I think that when the point is overlooked, well… the issues remain.
