You’re a pretty smart black guy!

I’ve heard it from friends, co-workers and many in between. Other variations include: You’re pretty smart for a black man. Is that a compliment?

Backhanded compliments happen in other contexts as well. I spent a couple of years living as an American abroad, and people would make remarks like, “Oh, I thought you were Canadian…you seem so educated.” Another classic face-palmer is, “You’re not really like a typical girl/woman,” which still pops up every now and again.
