Heartbroken Grandmother,

My granddaughter was never allowed to have contact with her father or us when she was a young child. He fought to see her but the court system in Indiana never held up the court orders for his ex-girlfriend to allow him visitation. This lasted well into her teen years. Though she has gotten to know her Dad more, she never takes a photo with him or acknowledges him as her father. Now that she is grown it continues to be a separation issue with her. No matter how much I try to connect with her she only responds sometimes in private. Never openly. I am heartbroken…for being of mixed heritage myself I know that family is everything. She is ashamed of the black part of us and it tears my heart to pieces. For if you deny one part…..you are denying yourself as a whole and right to exist.
