This memoir is the basis for the movie “Twelve Years a Slave”. I’d read this book several years before the movie was released. The movie doesn’t have nearly the impact as Mr. Northup’s first hand account of what he and other enslaved people endured. When I finished the book I thought it should be required reading for every American student, which at the time didn’t seem outside the realm of possibility. In our present political climate I think the chance of this happening is less than zero.
