Excuse me, do you do landscaping?

Ricardo

I was recently asked at a garden store if I did landscaping. I am a Mexican-American male, who is also a sergeant for a medium sized city police force in the Bay Area. I must say I was dressed shabbily, driving a small pick up, a lime tree in the cab, a shovel in the back with planter pots. The question was an innocent one in my opinion, asked by another Hispanic male who wanted to know if I was happy with my truck. He wanted to start a landscaping business. The case made me smile, but I did give a lot of thought the rest of the afternoon about the interaction. Would I have been so gracious with a white person, an Asian person, etc.?
