I feel inadequate but I’m American

Erica Hernandez,
Upland, CA.

I was born and raised in the United States. I don’t know anything else. I speak Spanish and come from Mexican parents but I’m an American. So, why is it that when i’m in Orange County, California, for example, I feel inadequate? I get weird looks and immediately feel completely intimidated. Is it because I have an olive complexion and dark hair and dark eyes? This is my home and all I know. I’m tired of feeling like I don’t belong in my own country.
