I Am Not But I Am

As we stepped on to the elevator accompanying a father and his two girls. She said “Look daddy black people”, and he turned redder than a ripe tomato and said, “That’s right honey, yellow, tan, gold, and brown people.” It was shocking to my family in hers, the fact that she had never seen someone beyond her race, and that I had never met anyone who hadn’t.
