I was at the local grocery store mulling over which yogurt to get, when a middle-aged woman came up to me. The first words out of her mouth were, “Do you speak English?”
I was so shocked at the time that before I could even get a chance to respond, she looked at me, her head tilted with a frown and said, “A little? No?” and then walked away.
Now, I know she was asking me directions as to where to find something in the store, I just wish she hadn’t judged me like that…and it still burns whenever I think back to that day. I wish I had said something witty and harsh to her, instead of standing there, too shocked to respond.
