Leon. My last name shouldn’t matter

Matthew B. Leon
El Paso, TX

I was born and raised in the boarder city of El Paso, Texas. I would say 80% of the population is hispanic. People here expect me to know Spanish because of where I live, my skin tone and because of my last name. The fact is that I don’t know any Spanish at all. I can barely even write English correctly. If I tell someone that I don’t know Spanish, they automatically ask me, “What’s your last name?” They don’t bother asking why. I am not my last name. I don’t know Spanish because I DID NOT and DO NOT have a need to speak Spanish. I don’t care if someone doesn’t know English, but don’t criticize me for not knowing Spanish. I can’t just go up to someone of Japanese decent and talk to them in Japanese just because they look like they would know it. Do you know how messed up that would be? Why can’t the same be applied to me? The worst part is that other hispanics are the ones doing this to me
