I am neither Mexican nor American.

Lucie C.,
San Antonio, TX.

I was born in Texas just this side of the river. I’ve lived in Texas all my life although I’ve traveled a lot. One day while traveling through the Texas Hill Country, a gentleman, perhaps Pakistani perhaps Indian (I know NOT to call person either because I might be off 50%), asked me if I was Mexican. Well, not exactly. My culture is related to Hispanics especially as a youngster, but after all these years it’s become muted (whiter?). I would call myself American (which is what I answered, and I’m sure he thought I was cheeky), but you know there will be people who might disagree since I am brown. Better yet, I am Native American, unspecified tribe (Comanche, I’d like to think). I am a member of the Human Race and no other for technically there is only that one race. Most of all, don’t assume. I’ve been to Mexico (college student) and have traveled widely in that beautiful country, but it’s not my country. I’ve traveled widely in the USA, and I do think it’s my country — but you know not everyone will agree. So just don’t assume. I’m brown, American, smart as a whip, and probably know your language better than you do (English/Spanish majors). Tootles!
