The Race Card Project partners with The Brooklyn Museum!

The power of The Race Card Project is that it allows individuals to listen to each other. And in this case, it also allows The Brooklyn Museum to listen to its community and tap into the conversations that usually take place in private spaces.

The Race Card Project encourages people to condense their observations and experiences about race into one sentence with just Six Words. In this case, people sent us their thoughts after visiting The Witness Exhibition at The Brooklyn Museum. We have received thousands of these Six-Word stories from all over the world since the project began in 2011 and we are consistently amazed by the candor and emotional depth. So often when we talk about race the emphasis is on what is said, instead of what is heard.

You won’t agree with everything you see and hear in The Race Card Project. But you will learn about life as lived by someone else.

The inbox is always open… and it is always interesting.

We didn’t go to the prom. Instead, we went to the movies and had to sit in the segregated balcony. Afterward, we ate our diner hamburgers on the back of my motorcycle because of the whispering and dirty looks. Finally, we went fishing. Fish didn’t seem to mind at all.🎣🍔🪩

This 6-word story from John Butterworth about his This 6-word story from John Butterworth about his mother who was a nurse in the 1950’s is a reminder of how much society has changed and how the stories we hear from our closest family members help share our own moral compass. John’s mother did not not like what she saw and she used that as a teachable moment that he still remembers years later…

My mother has just graduated from nursing school in Boston and moved to Maryland in the mid ‘50’s with my dad, who was in the Army at the time. Mom found a job at a nearby city hospital in the maternity ward. Mom placed a beautiful newborn in the front row of the viewing window. The newborn viewing area was actually designated as whites -only and the baby front and center was an African American among the white newborns. Mom was completely caught off guard and never fully accepted either the reaction or the explanation provided as part of the subsequent request to move the baby, and told us the story more than once as a cautionary life lesson about right, wrong, equality, and the reality of the day. Imagine that this was the way lives began....

Our inbox at #TheRaceCardProject is full of family Our inbox at #TheRaceCardProject is full of family stories so naturally on Mother’s Day we decided to dip on into the archives and share a few 6-word stories that capture people’s memories of their mamas. Isn’t it interesting that strangers see a family of different racial or ethnic backgrounds and feel like they must interrogate people they don’t know with questions about their blended families ???

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this or your own 6-word story …

I was terrified of traveling as a child because I hated people asking if I was adopted. Or the more frightening question: Is this woman really your mother, you can tell me the truth? I am half Chinese (and looked more Chinese than English as a child) with a red-haired, blue-eyed, English-descent mother and I was always afraid they were going to take me and my sister away from her. The same thing would happen with my Chinese father: Are these your children? Only since hitting my twenties have people started to say I look like either my mother or father, but even now when I look in the mirror I don’t see that I look like either of my parents. I think being told as a child I didn’t look like them or that I didn’t belong to them shaped how I see myself. I’m a halfsie, but don’t identify strongly either way; some days I look Chinese and some days I look English. I’ve never really fit either side.

This 6-word story in the graphic above was sent i This 6-word story in the graphic above was sent in by someone in Australia after seeing Michele on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It’s a powerful story about remembrance and reinvention.

“I miss eating Vindaloo with Dad.” -Australia

My father’s family was originally from India, but his mother was Scottish/Danish. People tended to assume he was a white guy with a deep tan, so when he and I went out for curry, the restaurant employees were surprised when he ordered vindaloo. One of my happiest memories of him was the time when, after Dad’s vindaloo had been brought out, all the restaurant staff came out and stood in the kitchen doorway and watched him eat as though he was defusing a bomb in front of them...
But because Dad was the only member of his family to reconnect with his heritage, I can’t talk about that with his family. They’re all pretending to be white. So I’m here, telling a stranger that I miss my late father, who loved vindaloo. “People like me sit with you” 📝 Full story “People like me sit with you” 📝

Full story: “I remember the first time I was made aware of “race”. My family had just moved to a new town, and it was my first day of 3rd grade. I knew no one, so when lunch time came around, I just found the closest open seat at the lunch tables, sat down, nervously said “hi” to the strangers around me, and started eating. I realized that the little boy I’d sat next to was just staring at me. When I asked if something was wrong, he told me “people like you don’t sit with people like me.”

“His tone wasn’t combative - it was of shock and disbelief. I had to ask him what he meant. He explained that he was black and that I was white. He thought I’d made a mistake sitting with him, because in that small town in central Georgia, white people avoided him or looked down on him. To this day, over 25 years later, I still think about Demarcus, and it still breaks my heart that anyone, especially a child, would ever feel that way.

“So to anyone out there - I sit with people like you. And I hope that you would be willing to sit with me, too.”

About the Project

In 2010, award-winning journalist Michele Norris started The Race Card Project, where she asked people around the world to send her a postcard, and, in just six words, share their thoughts, questions, experiences, and aspirations about identity and race. The result was astonishing. The responses were vulnerable, honest, and revealing. And she compiled many of the postcards into a new book called "Our Hidden Conversations: What Americans Really Think About Race and Identity."
