Saddened by such lack of education

Carolyn Spoerl,
Hudson, WI.

I taught in the Dominican Republic for a year and came back to teach in a rural American classroom. These two diverse experiences reminded me how much education is still needed. I was completely shocked to hear my white, American students say there ‘was no racism anymore’ and equally shocked to watch the incredibly overt racism in the Dominican Republic. Somehow, both places seemed to think because they owned their racism or denied any racism that there should be no farther discussion.
