Solidarity means losing (some) family ties

Jen Owen,
Glen Allen, VA

“I can hardly talk to you anymore.” My father said this after he’d used a racial epithet and I told him never to say that. I don’t want that hate put in my children’s’ heads and hearts. NO, you never COULD talk to me like that. We left that family gathering, and we’ll probably have to leave a whole lot more because of the same thing because most of my family is like this. My kids have to know that we won’t accept the disrespect of others toward our friends because of their race, religion, orientation, ANYTHING. Even when those people are the ones we love the most.
