The fiction of whiteness imperils humanity.

Evan Sorem,
San Diego, CA.

I am a human being. I have lived nearly all my life in California. My ancestors have lived in California, Illinois, Wyoming, Utah, Tennessee, Virginia, Norway, France, Italy, England, the Netherlands and who knows where else. So, people view me as a “white” person.

In my 40’s, I have learned that there is nothing inherent in me to support the notion that I am a “white” person. So, I am now rejecting the label. I am a person. My children are people. My friend, who I heard called a “n*****” by kids driving by in a truck as we walked to his house, is a person too. The humanity of that friend is constantly in danger because of the perception of the kids in that truck that they are white and he is not. But they are not white people. They are people. As is he.

As was Trayvon Martin. As was Michael Brown. As was Eric Garner. As was Tamir Rice. As was Walter Scott…..

If we cannot act to destroy white supremacy. White supremacy will destroy us.

Family talks, and I get mad

Tasha Thompson,
Coon Rapids, MN.

I’m a 19 year old white female, and my grandma was born in the 40s. She is very old fashioned and when she talks about my mom’s work in a majority black community where the accept EBT, she starts to sneer and act like it’s the worse thing that could happen. It always makes me uncomfortable and I don’t even want to go to holidays anymore because I’m sick of her comments towards black people. It makes me upset that she would even think it is ok to talk like that, but my family just says it’s the way she was raised.

White male forties need not apply

Allan Millard
Canada

As a young, white male I never really considered that I might be privileged for no other reasons than my age, sex and skin colour. As a lawyer, jobs came easily and I enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. However, as I entered my forties and took a job in government I found that I was actually discriminated against for the same traits that aided my success in private practice. The result has been an awakening regarding the prevalence of ageism, sexism and racism in our society. In the case of government, what may have started out as a positive affirmative action program has morphed into a political tool that puts statistics ahead of competence, to the detriment of good government.
