“I can marry whoever I want.”

I never really have thought through what my grandma was saying. I was only just a little girl. I still am but after all these years, I have decoded her. She never thought she was being controlling. She never knew how meaningful all those sentences, all those messages were to me. I thought she was just joking.“You can’t marry a black man” she says. “You can’t marry a Chinese man.” Not knowing that she’s stereotyping all those people by their skin color or their religion based on past events. I never knew if her parents taught her to be this way. I never knew them at all. I have a lot to learn for her because i want to help her accept others not paying attention to their skin color, their religion, or from past events of others who are in the same culture. That is not the only stereotype i have encountered. A lot of people ask me “what are you?” and i say “I’m Mexican.” Then they always seem to have a face telling me “Really, you’re Mexican?” Another event was when I was on my way to my summer camp in a bus carrying all the others heading to the same place I had been asked the same question. When I responded they said, “Really? You look way too pale to be Mexican.” At that point I had no idea what to say back. I thought, I don’t have to be really tan to be Mexican. I took that comment very offensively and I immediately stopped talking to that person. I did not want to hang out with anyone who believes that you need to look a certain way to “fit into” your culture.

No Reality to Race

Race was never scientifically real. Race was invented in the 17th century. At this point, many people discriminated against Africans for their color and used them for free labor. Most of the population labeled others by their skin color or their characteristics, making others treat them a certain way. In reality 99.9% of each person is the same, so why does that 0.1% matter? This was scientifically proven by the Human Genome Project or the HGP. A student from University of Iowa College of Law states this piece: “Race is not biological. It is a social construct. There is no gene or cluster of genes common to all blacks or all whites. Yet, a person who could be categorized as black in the United States might be considered white in Brazil or colored in South Africa. Like race, racial identity can be fluid. How one perceives her racial identity can shift with experience and time, and not simply for those who are multiracial. These shifts in racial identity can end in categories that our society, which insists on the rigidity of race, has not even yet defined.” Many people don’t know the truth about this statement. Therefore, causing others to still think that racism is an appropriate thing to do to others. If people don’t know this, most people will think that race is scientifically and socially real, and that has been something that has been a myth for many ages. I think people should know the truth about their society and not rely on the community or the media to tell you the truth all the time.

“Ethnicity Doesn’t Affect A Kind Heart”

Through parts of my life people and kids that I have known claim that something is racist or to use it as a insult. I have never been the target of these insult but it bothers me every time that someone has said one. During this project when I learned about how race isn’t real I was shocked to really realize what all of those kids I know have been saying such lies. What I do know though is that the kids that have said things like that aren’t educated on what race really is. The 6 word memoir that I have created reflects on my experience. To me every race can have people with a good and great heart but also ones who don’t. This makes me believe that anyone who is racist has hardly been exposed to lots of unique and different people. Also that anyone can learn more about what they believe even if it’s wrong. I am proud at what my personality is like to this subject. I hope that soon more and more kids can have the same perspective as I am glad to have.

Race is fake but, society doesn’t think so.

It has recently been proved that biologically race isn’t a real thing, but, is socially a powerful topic, that can dramatically affect someone’s life. The largest dilemma that causes racism in the younger generations is the lack of education about this topic. According to Professor Marcus Feldman of Stanford University and his team “All humans are 99.9% identical and, of that tiny 0.1% difference, 94 % of the variation is among individuals from the same populations and only 6 % between individuals from different populations.”. This is proof that race is something that has been created and then built onto by the people who don’t take the time to truly work through their thoughts. People may say that white is a better race than the others, but that only goes skin deep… we all have the same problems. We also have the same things to be proud of within what we can learn and grow to be. This really shows how gullible people can be if they listen to others and don’t think for themselves. Race is something that was truly created because of the differences of people and then was breed into a huge social problem. Education is what can fuel a downfall of race and racism. If there are people who know what is right then there is a chance ; One that is growing; to stop the wrongness in our society.

”I am white, But not racist.”

I’ve been called racist just by talking to someone of color. As someone whose ancestors are English, American, French, and Belgian, I realize, that being called racist isn’t the worst thing someone can do to you in terms of discrimination in ethnicity and racism, but I think it is something to be aware of. Just because if I, a white person, I’m talking to a person of color, doesn’t mean I’m being racist or saying racist things to them. When two human beings talk to each other, it doesn’t have to be in a negative way. Personally, I believe that everyone should be able to talk to each other who is not their own race or ethnicity. Some issues today, especially in schools, is when people say “oh that’s racist!” When it’s nowhere near that. I think that race should be discussed positively because it is one part of what makes everyone unique. And, throwing around the phrase, “That’s racist!” makes it not have as a strong effect when someone actually is being racist. In conclusion, humans should be able to talk to other humans without them being called racist. Also, we should celebrate others differences.

Race is Fake, but Racism Isn’t.

Race is something humans have created. Slavery in America was created when the first African slaves were sent to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to farm tobacco. Americans did this because they needed free labor. They needed these slaves from Africa to think they were less than the Americans to “keep them in place.” Slavery was never okay. How would you feel if I told you slavery is still affecting us today? These “ideas” that some people are better than others created racism. The lingering idea of this anarchy is affecting us 397 years later.
In 1950, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) released a statement saying that “all humans belong to the same species and that ‘race’ is not a biological reality but a myth, a social reality. They found this out using anthropologists, geneticists, sociologists, and psychologists”, yet racism still exists.
Early humans came from Africa. As population grew, humans migrated from Africa to new areas. These new areas where different than Africa, so the humans had to adapt. In areas like England, it was not as hot as Africa, so people didn’t need darker skin to protect them from the sun. While people in hotter climates needed their skin to be dark to keep them from sunburn and heatstroke. This, is why humans look different. But why are people today still getting shot and killed because of it? Are we listening to Martin Luther King Jr’s dream, or our own, deadly one? According to DCentric, out of all students being bullied, 54% are Asian Americans, 38% are African Americans, 34% are Hispanic, 31% are White. And people still say racist bullying doesn’t exist. Even adults are being bullied on the streets for race. Is this what we are teaching kids today? How to be racist? Lastly, we need to step up. Don’t be a bystander. Everyone is human and everyone has thoughts and emotions. We need to show future generations we are not all separate races, we are one. The human race.

“White” is not a skin tone

R.E.A.L. Talk,

It has always confused me when people call others “white”, or “black”, because no one’s skin is “black”, or “white”. Besides, no one names their kids the color of their skin, so why do we call them that? In the past I have made myself feel guilty because someone once told me that I was Hitler’s version of “pure” and “perfect, ”blonde hair, blue eyes. I also feel responsible, and feel that I have to be racist because throughout most of history, I would be what was thought of as the “superior race”. When I was in 4th grade someone told me that I was racist because me and all my friends were “white”. I thought that meant that I had to be friends with other “races” just to prove that I was not racist even if I had nothing in common with them and didn’t get along with them. I have now learned that I should be friends with people because they are what I look for in a friend and “race” has nothing to do with friendship.

Race doesn’t exist, but racism does

Race is NOT real, yet it could mean life or death for someone. According to Vox, an American news website, “There isn’t a race chromosome our DNA that people can point to it simply doesn’t exist, this of course does not mean that the concept of race isn’t hugely important in our lives”. Although race is not scientifically and biologically real it can affect someone’s life greatly. Evidence from the American Anthropological Association says that “Physical variations in the human species have no meaning except the social ones humans put on them”. Therefore if humans hadn’t made these categories there would be no race or racism. “During the 19th century people used “race” to justify the retention of slavery”. This means that race was created so that certain people could have power over others and get free labor. Proving that racism created race because of the human hunger for power and categories. Although race does not biologically exist, unfortunately since we made these “racial categories,” racism does. So let’s end this social construct that we created for power, because we are one race… The human race!

I am more than a “race”

R.E.A.L. Talk,

I wrote this six word memoir because people should know that no one should assume someone else’s ethnicity. I also wrote this six word memoir because most people that I encounter think of my ´race´ and tend to assume what ´race´ I am and sometimes question me about it or ask me about my ethnicity. I haven’t experienced much racism in my life but I have seen some people say racist comments at school or on the internet. I think that some people are racist because they don’t know what they are talking about so they assume things that they think are true. It is everyone’s job to make sure that people know that stereotyping is wrong and it needs to stop.

´There is only one race, The human race´

Race is not scientifically real, it is a social construct. One of the first people to categorize people with ´race´ was Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in 1776. He was a German scientist who categorized people into five different groups by their physical appearance, by where they were born, and their lifestyle. The five categories he put people into were Caucasian, Mongolian, Malayan, Ethiopian, And American. The American Anthropological Association says that during the 19th century people were put into a hierarchy and sorted people into categories by their ethnicity and were given different ranks on the hierarchy by their physical traits. This evidence shows that race is not real and that it is a man made idea. This proves that race is a manmade concept used to discriminate people and put them into groups. In conclusion, race is a completely wrong concept that has no scientific evidence of being real.

I AM MEXICAN, NOT AN IMMIGRANT.

R.E.A.L. Talk,

I have watched movies and shows where actors make fun of Mexicans. This really doesn’t bother me because I learned not to let it. Negative comments towards me used to bother me in the past where I would get to the point where I would want to hit people, but now I am chill. But still I feel like it’s not right, they need to stop because people who are watching this will get offended and get mad at this because like I said, it’s not right. When I hear the word immigrant I think of Mexicans because now that people see us like that, it make me think the same which makes me mad. I feel that when people hear the word immigrant they think of us, the Mexicans and now that Donald Trump is in they election it makes it worse because now people see us as drug dealers and criminals. I live near a lot of Mexicans and most of my friend are Mexicans also. I do say Mexican jokes too. In my old school I got in a roast session and the person I was roasting with said “Go back to cleaning something that’s what you’re good at.” So if he wants to be racist it makes me want to racist too. He was a Caucasian so I said a few things that I don’t want to say right now but let’s say it wasn’t nice. After the battle we were fine we started laughing but still we shouldn’t have done that. So the thing is about me is I really don’t care what people say about me. I think of it as a joke when people say bad things about me. So if you see me in a garden, I’m just trying to make money. If you won’t do it, I will. We’re not stealing your jobs, we are fixing and making jobs better so if you don’t like that then you go to Mexico and you go start a job there and see how it is.

Does Race Exist in This World? NO!

Race does not exist at all. If I were you I would agree because this going to get real right now. The reason this word exists is because in the 18th century when the Americans came to Africa to collect slaves, basically for slave labor, they needed to depict a way to separate White people from Black people. Ok imagine you doing what you do with your family and then these people come and take you from your family and then they make you as their slave. What would you do? Nothing! But now, we can do something about it and people can’t do anything about it. You know what I mean? If you hear a white man saying that black people suck, you can’t punch them. You can talk to them but not touch him or her. Donald Trump says mean comments about Blacks, Mexicans, and Muslims. But, we shouldn’t do anything to him. WE made race up basically just so that we can judge each other. One thing that I don’t understand is why we still depict people by the color of their skin. We don’t want this to keep going. We stopped slavery in America between blacks and whites so we can stop racism! So let’s do it!

“Donald Trump: we’re not like him.”

Last year when the police brutality shootings started, my parents talked to me about what happened, they were really surprised and I was to. I wondered why these policemen would do such a thing when we have come so far with racism. I run into racism a lot during school: people saying racist jokes and people saying racist stuff to their friends just playing around with them, like “you’re so white I need sunglasses to look at you” when they say that you know there just joking around so it doesn’t hurt. Me and my friends have done these things we have said these things to each other, we all laugh at the jokes we say. The reason why I chose this six word memoir was because I think some people expect all white people to be racist and that’s not true, it’s actually racist to think that. Sometimes when I talk about racism I feel a little guilty because the whites were very racist towards blacks . I think I am very exposed to the problem because my school is very diverse. We are doing a project about race and racism, and also making merchandise which will hopefully create dialogue about race and racism. I used to think that racism wasn’t a problem because before the past two years there hasn’t been a lot of problems, but due to the problems we are facing today, I think we need to fix it. The police are supposed to be protecting us, instead some of them are choosing to go back to the way our country used to be.

Racism is Taught

Racism is taught, you aren’t born racist. If we were born with racism wouldn’t we have always been racist? According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), “For the past 500 years, people have been taught how to interpret and understand racism. Also, scientists attempted to classify human races based on variations in characteristics such as skin color, hair color, form, eye color, facial anatomy, and blood groups. In the recent past, various scientists, such as Franz Boas, have divided us into anywhere between three and more than thirty different races, without any success. Most of these hypothetical “races” were developed using assumptions about genetic relationships and distributions among different human populations.” That means this horrible thing has been taught to generations and generations of people in our world. Now we know racism is a problem we need to stop in our society, we need to fix this as soon as possible. If someone who were to disagree they might say if we weren’t born with racism how was it created. Well, it was created. When explorers from Europe landed on the islands with tribes they categorized them into races. According to the American Anthropology Association. After you read this, if you hear a racist comment I want you to stop it and tell them not to do that, to help our community.

Race doesn’t matter; What’s inside does.

R.E.A.L. Talk,

Lots of people have asked me if I was Filipino. I’ve always had the same reply, ”I am a Jamaican and Chinese mix”. After encountering people who asked me such questions, I wondered why it mattered what race I was. I have read books where characters were judged based on their race, such as the book, “Waiting for Anya”. In this book, the Nazi soldiers have come to Jo’s village to patrol the borders. Everyone thinks that these soldiers are bad and mean because the soldiers that came before had been rude and intrusive. They judged the soldiers based on their appearance instead of what’s on the inside. When people actually start to accept the soldiers they realize that not all Nazis are bad and that these Nazis certainly aren’t. Books like these teach kids that race doesn’t matter; what’s inside does. When will people start to accept that race doesn’t exist, humans only think it does?

Nature Didn’t Create Race: Humans Did.

Race isn’t real; we make it real. People should start to accept others for what’s on the inside and not the outside. According to a study by Charles Darwin, all humans are all the same species and are 99.5% the same. Among the family heirlooms that Charles Darwin inherited, symbolically speaking, was a china cameo depicting a black slave in chains, asking “Am I not a man and a brother?” This proves that people have falsely made race real. Why does this matter? Because, we the people need to understand that we are all equal no matter the race or religion. An opposing view may be that we aren’t equal and that only one race is superior. Again, Charles Darwin’s phrase that “all humans are all the same species and are 99.5% the same,” confirms my point. Does that other .5% really matter? In Theory, people should learn to welcome the inner-self instead of the outer-self, because nobody is more important than another.

You are more than one race?

R.E.A.L. Talk,

Before this project I didn’t know much about race or racism, but then I figured out a lot of people have been stereotypical or racist in my community, with my friends, or people on social media. When I heard this term that people were saying it kind of hurt me because they were saying things like ¨ All white girls do this…¨ and I didn’t know how to react because I didn’t know that was towards me. I thought this because I didn’t identify as ¨white.” I identified as Irish, Norwegian, Scottish, and more. That’s how I got this memoir because a lot of people think I am just ¨White¨ or ¨American¨ but I wanted to prove that I am more than that, I think I´m way more unique this way. I´ve grown up in amazing, loving and accepting family, I’ve always been taught to treat people how they want to be treated, which helped me because some parents don’t teach their kids about racism and how everyone should be treated the same, which could cause problems when their older because if we don’t address this problem nothing will change. Sometimes people don´t want to talk about the issue of racism because it could be uncomfortable or they don’t want to talk about the negative parts of life and what’s going on.

Race was made by US.

Race was not made by genetics, it was made by US. Most people think race is biologically real, but it was really made by Europeans who found people that looked and talked differently from them, so they categorized them into a ¨race.¨ This happened because they were ¨usually assigning the highest qualities to their own people and lower qualities to the “Other” people, either lower classes or outsiders to their society.¨ They made it so they were more powerful than people that were different from them. Race is a manmade word that turned into racism, which caused a lot of controversy between different ethnicities, because they were being rude to each other, but it all started with the Europeans being racist, then evaluated to ¨white¨ people being racist against ¨black¨ people. Racism back then was awful: there were separate water fountains, pools, schools. Even though we’ve come a long way with fixing a lot of racism in our world, there is still a very long way to go because we don’t accept the fact that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside. It matters what you look like on the inside.

Growing up I never encountered racism. I use to think everyone had the privilege to do anything they like such as going to the same restaurant or going to the movies. What I know now is that is wasn’t like that. Our history has shown that we have segregated people based their color of skin. Yes, it has gotten better but we can still improve. We can do this by if you see someone being racist or being mean tell them stop and tell why it is so bad to be racist.

Many people have died through racism in our world.

Race is a fake thing. It is not real. People just made you think that is is real. There is one race and it is human. According to the Gilder Lehram Institute of American History, “10.5 million slaves die in the world. From about 1526 to 1867, 12.5 million slaves had been shipped from Africa, and 10.7 million had arrived in American. The decade 1821 to 1830 still saw over 80,000 people a year leaving Africa in slave ships. The average cost of a slave in America in 1850 was about $400,about $12,000 in today’s money. Although slavery is no longer legal anywhere in the world, human trafficking remains an international problem and an estimated 25-40 million people are living in illegal slavery today.” Race was a man-made idea to separate blacks and whites and throughout history, so many people have died through racism in our world. Race is a fake thing that is not real.

Race and racism isn’t something I’ve had really any experiences with all my life. I don’t know anyone, I’ve never heard or seen anything before videos and everything with this project, and nothing has ever happened towards me. The only experiences I’ve had are from again the videos and everything from this project. Also old friends I had growing up. My friends I had when I was 0-5 we’re all different ethnicities, so I grew up with all different kinds of people. “Race” wasn’t and isn’t something we ever worried about. All schools I’ve gone to haven´t been against any ¨races¨ either. I’ve never been taught anything with it and we never talk about it at home, but we still aren’t racist or haven’t cared about “races”. We don’t know what our ethnicity is. My mom was adopted, so she doesn’t really know much from her birth parent´s side. My dad doesn’t really know anything for his side. My mom knows her birth mother is Spanish but that’s all. My dad thinks he’s either German, French, or both, but he doesn’t remember. With this project and all I know, I’ll remember that race isn’t a thing and will continue to not judge someone by what “race” they are ad won´t ever be racist with this knowledge and already known knowledge. 😀

Race isn´t real, racism is.

You may think that race is scientifically real, but it actually isn´t; it is something us humans have made up. According to The Huffington Post,”For more than a century, natural and social scientists have been arguing about whether race is a useful classificatory tool in the biological sciences — can it elucidate the relationship between humans and their evolutionary history, between humans and their health. In the wake of the U.S. Human Genome Project, the answer seemed to be a pretty resounding “no.”” Race can´t explain your health or history, it is simply just a construct we have made that has turned into what it is today. With this evidence, you can see race really isn´t real. Just a social construct that people now believe that is biologically real. Even though race isn´t real, racism is. Racism even started before race was a thing; and both have real effects. According to a small article about a biological anthropologist, ¨Who’s especially interested in the scientific utility of the idea of race: he believes scientists cannot use race as shorthand for genetic variation. It’s inaccurate, and it also prevents us from seeing the consequences of living in a racist society.” Hopefully now you don´t think race is real, and know that it is just a social construct we have made up, and that racism however, is.

I’m not “white”, I am human.

Personally, people haven’t been racist to me, but I have heard racist things being said to other people. One example was at gymnastics, when someone said to someone else that they weren’t good at gymnastics because the were black; I didn’t think that what she said could offend anybody, but now I know that a racist comment like that can offend someone much more than a lot of other comments. I have heard a lot more racist comments then I thought I had in the beginning of this project. I now notice stereotypes put on certain races. For example, most people think of Mexicans as drug lords, and rapists because a couple of Mexicans made a bad choice. Really anyone, of any race can do these things, so it really doesn’t make any sense. In conclusion, people shouldn’t be stereotyped, because people of the same race are just as different as people in a different race.

Race is Fake: So Why Hurt So Many?

Race is not scientifically real. We only have different skin tones because of geography. For example, people who live in the snow were normally light skinned and short and meaty because they needed to keep warm, and people who live in the hotter, sunny places, usually have darker skin and are tall and skinny so they have more places to sweat. According to the Huffington Post, “Scientists were fighting over whether race was biologically real or not, so they did an study and the answer was race was not real.” Race is real socially, but not scientifically. So basically race only exists to make people feel bad about their appearance. In conclusion race is by itself is racism because it puts people in categories and makes some people feel more superior than others.

Straight white male? Must be racist.

Even if I haven’t really been discriminated against by groups of people thinking they are superior to other groups of people, I feel that as a white person I am being mis-represented by white supremacy groups and neo-nazis. I feel that certain groups of people blame people like me because we, as in white males, have always oppressed others and I am seen as a part of that. Yes that is true that men have oppressed others, yes most if not all dictators are men, yes white men enslaved black men, but that does not mean all men oppress and hate other groups of people. White people are not to blame for all the injustice in the world, I as a human am just as angry when an unarmed black man is shot for no reason other than being black. I as a United States citizen am just as frustrated with the criminal justice system in America and how there is an incentive to arrest, pull over, and ID minorities and how private prisons can make laws.

I as a young adult am just as horrified when a man can buy firearms and shoot up a school, taking innocent lives. It is not my fault that there is racism in america, it is a problem we as the human race created and must solve. Saying every life on the Earth matters shouldn’t be a symbol of racism. Saying that shouldn’t be frowned upon because it takes away from black lives matter. I am not saying that black lives don’t matter just to clarify I just feel that we shouldn’t focus on one group or ethnicity because we should get to point in America where your gender, ethnicity, and religion doesn’t matter. If you are American that’s all that matters and nothing else. We need to get away from the bias and casual racism assuming a person’s actions before they have even done something because of how they look.

Race, is not real, so stop fighting because of it.

Yes you heard me, there is one race: the human race. We are all too similar to be a subspecies of the human race, meaning, that one race was created as as the human race. We classified each other into groups of people either so we could have an excuse for treating other groups as servants/slaves and to prove that they could treats others as inferior or to explain why we should get special treatment. Race is a social construct. This shouldn’t be up for debate, race was created to discriminate and to convince people that they were superior there is no other reason. During the 1800’s churches would teach about how slavery was ethical and should be allowed, during the late 1900’s and to this day we are trying to prove that a black man is a criminal, all for what? So we think of ourselves as better? According to the American Anthropology Association (or AAA) there is more biological variation in “racial” groups than between them. What they are saying is that two men of the same “race” standing next to each other are less alike than one of those men and a white man standing next to each other.

This means we are only different by a small amount, meaning calling a man of a different “race” a thief because of their looks and behavior is at the same time calling yourself a thief as well. We can’t do this to ourselves, separating each other by how we look. Why should I care? So what? You should care because while you’re reading this 59% of all the hate crimes being committed right now are racially and ethnically motivated. Meaning out of the roughly 455 hate crimes this month 268 will be about how people look and where they are from. This is unacceptable in America, the land where every person is created equal. If we can show people how stupid it is to think of others differently because of their looks most of those 268 hate crimes would cease, it doesn’t take a scientist to see that. As you can see we need to get past our petty differences and arguments based off of something that doesn’t exist. We need to teach everyone about this because a nation of immigrants shouldn’t be banning immigrants because of their culture and looks. We all at some point had our ancestors move here for a better life so why can others do the same?

To me race is just a made up way to put people in groups, based on the way they look. When did that start to matter? Stereotypes, Racism, Segregation, Slaves, and Wars. Stereotypes are a big part of race and racism. The following are the most common stereotypes for Black people. Blacks` are know to not know how to swim. Blacks are from the ghetto. Blacks all have afros or not done hair. All Black Women are sassy, angry, and loud. Black dudes are super violent by nature. Black people need White people to save them.

It really hurts to think people don’t know the truth about who I really am. Stereotypes really hurt people, I have experience with it many times, I get very hurt thinking that’s what people think about me. Just look at the Doll test. I think that people never really learned the truth about race. In class we busted the myth of race. RACE IS FAKE.

Race is Nothing to Change our Nation

Race is not real. Race is the classification of humans into groups based on physical traits, ancestry, genetics and lifestyle. Well that’s what people used to think. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) “All humans belong to the same species and that ‘race’ is not a biological reality but a myth.” When the European settlers/explorers came to america they saw people who didn’t look like the others. I bet you’re thinking well race came first. The settlers decided they were more superior which created racism and then race afterward. Think of it as if you were looking at an ants and you naturally squish the ants most people do. There is no way to tell a person’s “race”, not by skin color hair color or eye color. Race is not Real. Still don’t think so do some research, look it up. Many people would agree with me.

My mom and dad speak English!

Both my parents grew up in Mexico. When people see me they think they have to translate in Spanish for me. It seems everyone always asked “Do you know English?” When I was only six, the stereotypes I was exposed to were “You look Mexican, do you eat burritos?” and “Do you speak Spanish only?” or “Do you know english?” I’m portrayed as a kid who doesn’t know English well. People may assume my parents must not be able to speak English. I was born and raised in San Diego. At home, we speak both languages, Spanish and English. This is important to share because just because I look Mexican, you may not know that I could speak many different language other than Spanish. It takes a real dedicated parent to show their child what real culture is, false information takes a toll on kids later it’s better to know that race is a category to divide people. That is why it’s important to education young people. I know that race is what divides us it’s the word that made slaves work day and night, the word that broke lives, the word that was used for the splitting of equals.

Race is a myth.

Race is something that is a sensitive but important topic to talk about. Not many people know the truth. Race is not biologically real, but socially real. There is no such thing as race such as categories humans by the way they physically look. Bill Nye, a well-known scientist who is the CEO of The Planetary Society, states that “there is no such thing as a purebred dog, if you breed a chihuahua and a great dane it’s just a mix of genes that is the outcome, not a purebred species.” He has gotten controversial feedback on people not as open minded to the facts, but there isn’t anything that he can do. It’s a fact that race is a man-made idea. There are studies that “it’s not very healthy to put “labels” on people.” This is related to race in humans because even though each human has different traits they are all one species; human. The truth is labels don’t help at all, they make it seem as one person is more superior to another. As the Newsweek stated “It seems that the belief in human races, carrying along with it the prejudice and hatred of “racism,” is so embedded in our culture and has been an integral part of our worldview for so long that many of us assume that it just must be true”. Even though, race is a sensitive topic we should all learn to use our voice and not stay quiet.

“Race” is a concept humans created.

Before we did this project, I thought that race, was just, race, everyone had a race, and that was that, like a lot of the people in this world right now. But then in this project, we dived deeper, and we learned that “race” was just a concept created by humans. I had never thought about race this way before. It really opened a new perspective to me, and I think differently about race since then. My ethnicity is Chinese, and I connect with it quite a bit, because at home my parents speak Mandarin Chinese to me. Also, we eat mostly Chinese food at home, which is pretty different from Panda Express. Like my 6 word memoir says, “race” is a concept humans created, to treat different people differently, based on looks. Racism is still a problem in our world. We can’t just pretend like it’s not here. We need to treat all races equally, and not believe in stereotypes about different races. Chinese is my ethnicity, and I am proud of it! But in the end, we are all simply human.

Race is just a Social Construct Created by Humans.

Race is not scientifically real. Race is simply a concept humans created to classify “different” humans, based on physical appearance, so people could be treated differently. As Robert Wald Sussman, a professor and physical anthropologist puts in his book, The Myth of Race: The Troubling Persistence of an Unscientific Idea, “It is not a biological reality, however, but a cultural one. Race is not a part of our biology, but it is definitely a part of our culture. Race and racism are deeply ingrained in our history.” So race is not scientifically, or biologically real, it is just something we have woven into our society. Race and racism is taught, children are not born racist. Race is not scientifically proven, people just used it as a way to categorize, and discriminate against, people who look different. Race is a social view, that people are different, and should be treated differently because they look different. Race is a social construct, to make some people feel less, and some people feel superior, all because of outer appearance.
