I am told that it is surprising that at my age, gender and Hispanic culture I do not have any children yet. I hear that by the age of 15 it is common for Hispanic girls to become pregnant and quit school but that was not my stereotypical. I am 27 years old and I am working on getting my Master’s Degree.

Challenging the knowledge has no age

I am a literature professor in Brazil and after completing 40 years of age, I’ve decided to come to United States and attend a PhD program. If a program of this importance is already quite challenging, it becomes even more challenging when it is done in a second language, especially if you are a Latin person. So, next time you see any international student before you, embrace him/her, praise him/her and exalt the fact that he/she has decided to do this. Imagine yourself doing a graduate program in a language that is not yours.

Living in a world where quotas of minorities must be accepted into major institutions, being a white male becomes a disadvantage. If I am paired against a minority of same academic and extracurricular achievements as me, I will most likely be brushed aside. I believe the only true way to make things fair is for applications to be blind to race, gender and age, only by making race no longer an issue will we truly reach equality.

Their age, not race, scares me

Many teens act like they are 10 ft tall, can live forever. I don’t know what happened in Trayvon’s case but I’m 6’5″ and 300 lbs and feel uncomfortable when confronted by young adults no matter what color they are. Standing with their hands in their pockets and they have a hoodie on is scary because I don’t know what to expect.

Bias in one form or another will always be with us because we are human. Overcoming bias only comes with understanding each other. Always treat others as you wish to be treated.
