I am not my color, though I am in some ways what my color represents in America. I am, by this definition, an African American first because this what people see. I also identify with African American history, culture, family structure and faith practices. But alone in my house where I work as a writer, I am just me, skin and bones, joyful, happy to learn new things, getting adjusted to being a dog mom, trying to stave off the unhealthy aspects of aging me. I have no color or gender or height or age until I see a mirror or leave my house and am confronted by a human response to some part of me that I love and adore.

I am not responsible for the actions of people one hundred and fifty years ago who enslaved an entire race. The institution of slavery is a horrific part of American History, and it was a heinous crime against African Americans. Because of that institution, there is racism alive and around still and it makes me absolutely furious. But it is not my fault. When broad statements like “white people are all racists” are made, I get a bit frustrated because it’s just not true. I do not contribute to the problem [of racism] and believe that I am a good enough person to stand up if I were to witness a hate crime against any race in front of me. Just because I am white does not mean that I am prejudiced or racist. I want to help in any way I am able; I want to change people’s minds about their prejudices towards people who are different from them.

It is a wondrous and wonderful experience to see the “AHA” moment appear on White students faces when they finally understand about tragedy and waste of chattel slavery. Many were quite distressed about the willingness of so many to collude in developing the Black Codes of the South. Statutory inhumanity has eroded this nation’s compassion for one another over time as we still live with the vestiges of the Civil War today.
I believe that learning about the other stories in American history creates fertile spaces for discussion about an American dream deferred.
