Moving to Boise, Idaho when I was 7, I dealt with a change. I quickly felt as if I wasn’t the same as everyone else since I was one of the only Mexican kids in the Elementary School. The only other Mexican kids were my siblings so we all we told we were different. Whether classmates flocked to me because I was different in their eyes, it was overwhelming being paid attention to due to my skin color.

Im Latina, I was practically raised in Central America… Guatemala if you couldn’t have guessed. I do have a warm skin tone and have a typical “Mexican” appearance… whatever that may mean to you. But when you hear me speak Spanish I tend to have people second guessing if I’m actually Mexican.

I am told that it is surprising that at my age, gender and Hispanic culture I do not have any children yet. I hear that by the age of 15 it is common for Hispanic girls to become pregnant and quit school but that was not my stereotypical. I am 27 years old and I am working on getting my Master’s Degree.

I have spent 42 of my 44 years in this country and it doesn’t make an ounce of difference, I’m still treated differently. My head says I’m American my heart says I’m Colombian, because that’s where I’m accepted.

When people look at me they think I’m white. Once I start speaking perfect Spanish, they freak out and ask me either where I’ve learned it, or if I am from Mexico. Even, when I tell them that I am from Argentina, they automatically think that just my parents are. Just because we speak Spanish doesn’t mean we are all Mexican. Or when they ask “Why are you white?” as if every Latino is dark. You think I would be used to it, but it shocks me every time, the things people come up with. CBU HIST 311
