My husband and I got married and adopted three beautiful children on the same day last summer. Happy times! I have learned more since these kids have arrived than I ever new possible. A same-sex parent family with trans racial kids draws a lot of attention both in the big city and in a rural Wal-Mart.

Growing up in society I have always been questioned about my race. I come from two very, very light-skinned African-American parents, so therefore I am very light, have soft curly “white people” hair, and don’t necessarily “talk black”. Being this kind of person draws attention to myself because people always make a big deal out of how I “don’t fit the typical stereotypes of a black person”. I am constantly trying to change that image and stereotype for the better every single day.

I dislike it when people say that they don’t pay attention to the color of one’s skin, or they’re essentially “color-blind”. There should be no PREJUDICE or DISCRIMINATION toward anyone on the basis of their skin tone, but race creates cultures that have their own beliefs, traditions, systems of life. Respect all cultures, races, cultural identities, and love your own background.

These words uttered by a co-worker. To me such a statement stems from a desire to divert attention from the matter at hand — that an innocent black child was murdered.
It is this form of racism that is most common and most insidious.
My response was not a politically correct non-response. It was not a gentle nod of the head.
I confronted it directly and stated, “An innocent black child was murdered. The murderer is known and has not even been questioned. Everything else is irrelevant.”
He quietly left my office.
