No thanks, I’d rather not say., .

I was going on my 8th grade trip for Costa Rica last year and I was with one of my best friends; (I’m going to keep their name anonymous). Wore a hijab for their religion, because of this she got stopped for three “random” security checks when we were at the airport. Not surprisingly me nor none of my other friends (they were the only one wearing a hijab and they had dark skin) got stopped. Even though I knew racism was very prevalent today I still didn’t know it was this bad. This made me realize how much people judge others just by their race and how they choose to dress.

I envy our kids who seem to be colorblind and take diversity for granted. Having grown up in the 50’s and 60’s, I regret that my ability to understand fully, appreciate and relate to some of my friends’ life experiences is limited. Divides based on socio-economics are significant but divides based on race seem to be more significant and harder to bridge. If we can’t make the divide smaller, we need to build more bridges.

We are all best friends forever.

Despite years of developing a very close relationship, my friendship with the only black woman in my circle of friends crumbled with my first marriage. I’m not sure what role, if any, race had to do with it. We haven’t spoken in nearly 15 years, but I miss her terribly. I haven’t been able to establish that kind of profound friendship since.
