Being Vietnamese but born in the US created a feeling of disconnection for me neither fully connected to Vietnamese heritage nor entirely embraced by mainstream American culture.This highlights a struggle to find belonging and identity in a space between two worlds. It reflects the complexities in my life of cultural duality and the search for myself in a multicultural society.

Thai-German-French-Cambodian. In Asia people always assume I’m white, and am treated like an outsider, telling me I’m not really Asian, but in Europe, it’s the opposite. So if I’m neither accepted as a white, or an Asian, I can’t help but feel like I’m always excluded.

My parents are South American immigrants who were granted amnesty during the 1980s. I was born and raised in Texas. I didn’t have many Hispanic friends growing up. I grew up around many Texas Germans and am now at college in Houston studying German. People are surprised when they discover that I have a Texas accent and that I have trouble speaking Spanish. I’m not very close to my culture which upsets my family. It’s hard figuring out exactly where I might fit in since I’m different than all of my white friends but not exactly close to my own culture. I have been discriminated against because of my skin color in the past. Just trying to figure out my place in society.
