We must learn to live together

My family donated Nat Turner’s Bible to the AAMHC of The Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Mr. Turner was baptized on Persons Millpond in Southampton County in 1828 and had the Bible with him traveling through the area preaching the gospel. The Bible is in the right place and is an educational tool and a great healer. Persons UMC, est 1838 in Southampton County, VA is celebrating our 181st year and still going strong. Also, I have been involved in U of R’s Growing Up Civil Rights Project exhibit: A Community Remembers. The participants experienced the times and are a living legacy that can share the stories of our past.
Are You the Three Wise Men?
Donna Reiss,
Brownstown Twp , MI.
Its Christmas time in Detroit, 1961. I was 3 years old and in the bank line with my Mom. There were 3 black men in front of us in line, talking and laughing amongst themselves. I had never seen, nor let alone been exposed, to people who didn’t look like me. All I had known is what was in picture books at home, and we had pictures of the dark skinned men who visited Jesus in the manger. Being an inquisitive little chatterbox and fairly smart, I asked these 3 fellows if this was who they were… What did I know? My Mom wanted to dive under a desk in embarrassment. Luckily for us, they laughed in what I hope now is amusement at the innocent question of a 3 year old toddler.
Not enough hate in my heart.

I recently had a family member decide that he doesn’t want anything to do with me because I refuse to believe that my race or sexual orientation makes me in any way superior to any other human being. Apparently (according to this family member) the bible says White people are better than Black people, and allowing gay people to be in love is like accepting a dog and cat as a couple. I am now looked down upon because I find this philosophy completely unethical.
1610 – bible used to bless slavery
Lisa Smith,
Boston, MA.
In 1610 Catholic priest asked his superiorsif slavery was condoned by God. Answer came back…none of more learned men of cloth saw anything against the enslavement of another human being. I’m white and l seeth with anger over what happens (ed) to Blacks.

Also….I love this bible verse — my first thought! The race is not given to the strong or swift…but to the one that endures.
