Blessed to grow up in diversity

I grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago at a time when our community worked extra hard to be racially and ethnically diverse on purpose. Our small community was also nationally recognized for its racial diversity. I recall thinking that it was so incredible to be around so many different kinds of people! Our school pictures looked like a rainbow! There were black, white, Latino, Filipino, Asian and Native American students in all of my graduating classes. We played together, fought one another (as kids will do) but we also fiercely defended one another if necessary… It didn’t matter your ethnic or racial background… If you were from our community or from our high school we we were family.

White. Live on Indian Reservation. Blessed!

I have lived my whole life with Ojibwe people, am a fishing & canoe guide at the beginning of the Mississippi River. My life is filled with their customs, hunting and gathering for my table. We spend the winters on the border of Mexico, now, and they are much like my Indian neighbors. I am so blessed to share mother earth with these people. I–Dream, Plan, Do.

Am I supposed to feel blessed?

Jenny,
Newark, NJ.

I am white and grew up where I was a minority. I have been in situations where people of color have said “What’s up with this white girl?” My friends who are black, Puerto Rican would always come to my defense and say “She’s not white!” In essence telling people I am cool to hang out with. I see this in two ways. One, that I am accepted and two, that there is something wrong with being white.

Can someone shed light on this for me?

Thank you.
