I hear people talking about being a part of a pure race. Race is a distinction placed upon one’s physical and genetic traits most notably skin color. Race is a social construct created to make one category seemingly superior over another.
Biologists and anthropologists have discovered race mixing throughout the history of humankind. I have both an African and a Native American bloodline or diaspora (and maybe others). Therefore, what am I really – Black or Red? While I choose to identify as Black/African- American, I am really a mirror with many reflections.

Because I married a white man

People are always surprised when they see me. My last name doesn’t. “match” how I look. Although my parents are awesome and didn’t think twice about any of their children’s spouses race , my aunts and uncles made so many comments ranging from me not wanting to be a true hispanic to saying that I was cleaning up the bloodline all because my husband is white. My kids also have a hard time because they are identified as white because of there appearance but they know they aren’t.

Growing up and even now I am always denied my Mexican heritage by lots of people of all races. I am Irish + Mexican and a few other races. My family treated my Hispanic blood as a taboo, the Latinos I knew as a child rejected me once I shared I was half white. I am 17 now and my plans are to travel to Texas + Mexico to learn from Mexicans their culture, how they want it to be experienced. To be completely honest I am scared of rejection- that I will be hated on and unwanted, but this is an life experience that I cannot leave undiscovered. Wish me the best for that experience. I’m thinking that I will write about it and put it online for others to witness.
