white parents white son black daughter

Amanda,
Fredericksburg, VA

I had a child with a white man, then was in a relationship with a black man which resulted in a daughter. My sons father and I got back together and since my daughter was born my sons father has been in her life. You would never know that my now husband (sons father) and daughter are not generically related. Along with my husbands family she is their great grand daughter, grand daughter, niece, and cousin. The bond they all share is pretty incredible.

I became an activist and prisoner

Dan Kelly
San Francisco, CA

I was in a Brooklyn HS in the early 60s and the images coming from the south inspired me to question the social conventions that supported segregation, From that, it was a short jump to questioning foreign policies that justified invading 3rd world countries. College seemed irrelevant and I left it in 1967 to join the anti-war movement as a pacifist, inspired by MLK, Gandhi, and Dorothy Day. I worked with the farmworkers from Delano when they came to NYC for the first grape boycott. I resisted the draft and spent 2 years in prison. Afterward, I joined with 1199 to organize workers at the hospital I worked in. Eventually, I returned to school, became a physician, and was elected to the Board of Education in SF, where I have lived for more than 30 years. None of this would have occurred without the inspiring leadership of King, Bond, Liuzzo, Schwerner, Goodman, Chaney and so many others. Brotherhood is possible and individuals CAN change the world.

I am not my daughter’s nanny.

I unfortunately found that people have certain stereotypes of what it means to be Black inculcated in their minds and apparently the tone and features of my own child do not fit their bias. As a result, people would rather view my relationship with my daughter as servitude for a paycheck rather than a bond forged by a mother’s love.

White father, Black mother, BEAUTIFUL GIRLS!

I am the product of two people who only saw “who” there were, not “what” they were. Because of their bond, they produced four daughters (including me) who I believe are very beautiful. Mixed-race children represent the beauty that comes from open hearts and open minds. And, they have GREAT hair 🙂
