I have been bullied throughout my years. Being bullied caused a wall to be built around my heart and I couldn’t feel or let any emotions out. I let darkness take over my life, but now that I’ve grown up and found light, I feel relieved. I am who I am, I will not change for anyone because God made me this way, and I’m proud.

First generation with Indo-Dutch/ El Salvadoran heritage. Family has seemingly always been the non-white in the group, especially when listening to the my parents’ stories of assimilation. So strange then when my son was bullied at his new school in Berkeley for being the white kid.

Moving from New York to Ohio to Milwaukee in my 25 years on this Earth, I’ve encountered race in so many different ways. From celebrating and learning about all the different ethnicities in my classroom in elementary school, being bullied for being white in my urban middle school, to being incorrectly perceived as being “just like” my upper-class white counterparts at Miami University in Ohio, to working for an education/social-justice non-profit in hyper-segregated Milwaukee, I’ve learned how much race truly is a social construct. It’s something that is learned from our environments and the people in those environments. Being perceived as ‘white’ has yielded me an overwhelming amount of privilege, and it makes me feel sad that if people recognized my mixed identity (I’m partly Native American), I may not have been afforded those privileges. But, maybe, those girls in middle school would’ve been nicer to me?

I’ve witnessed several other whites that have had similar experiences of being beaten or bullied by blacks, throughout my life. I’ve witnessed much more racism towards whites than the other way around. Some people say it’s racist to be afraid of blacks. Where I grew up, it’s just common sense. This was not taught to me by my parents or the media. This was learned through tough experiences growing up. To this day I have a mistrust and at times an absolute hatred for some blacks because of what I went through and continue to see happening in America. And it’s not just the violence that has shaped these thoughts. From seeing black leaders making accusations of racism at the drop of a hat to black comedians making racist remarks the main subject of their standup routines. As a white male I feel as though blacks can get away with racism of any kind because the media is too scared to point out the hypocrisy. But we all see it. And racism will never die in America as long as the black community continues to take advantage of “white guilt”.

I was bullied heavily by African American women in Junior HS and told to watch ky back. I ran for secretary of my school against a very nice (AA) peer. It was my first experience with hatred I find now that there continues to be much hatred against whites but this never gets portrayed. Hatred goes both ways in society.
