Our kindergarten daughter wanted to go to her friend’s Halloween party. I saw that the address and the protective father in me did not feel safe letting her go. But I called and the black man I spoke to certainly heard the fearful white father on the other end of the phone and assured me that they were holding the party in the house in order to keep the children safe. Short story is that this was among the most memorable and fun Halloweens we’ve had.

My thoughts matter. Don’t ignore me.

Time after time in meetings and discussions with white people my input on a topic goes without acknowledgment until another person, usually white, brings up the identical idea, which then is acknowledged as a great idea. I’m sitting there thinking, “Didn’t I just say that?” I used to rationalize it away with the thought, “Maybe they just didn’t hear me “, now I’m feeling “they just didn’t want to hear me”, especially after someone else in the meeting says “that’s what Larry said”.
My thoughts matter, don’t ignore me!
