I am the descendant of a line of plantation owners in South Carolina. As a gay man, my upcoming marriage will finally occur on our 20th anniversary together. My larger southern family struggles to see my identity as sacred, just as they struggle still to see minority life as sacred. But what progress. From chains to wedding bells with a gay Asian man.

Every American black person, who succeeds is and was self-educated to a great extent, at least in the beginning. When children are young, the chains around their minds and bodies are able to be broken with a Will to reach farther than what is in front of them. In this way, genius and others simply very good can come from almost nothing because they can generate stepping-stones by imagination. Funds and teacher salaries are good but most essential is never to snuff out the light of curiosity and wonder for the things around them. Some may not accelerate but they will go farther, if around them are others, who do. .

I’m afraid that the results of those actions may never be changed. We have been fighting every since we got here. Even a Black President can’t get respect.

There are many demeaning stereotypes that our nation has adapted throughout history. For example, women are typically judged as weak, which is why the phrase “you can’t loose to a girl” is so prevalent among children. These stereotypes are often applied to people of a different race, color, or religion, and it has become almost a social norm to disregard the opinions or feelings of others for the entertainment of our peers. Because we have grown accustom to this being a part of our history we don’t understand that people take offense to jokes criticizing them for no reason, or criticizing their culture/the way they grew up. These stereotypes have been a part of our society for many years, and generation after generation adapt them to their everyday lives.
