White immigrant = not an immigrant.

Linda M Larsen,
Hudson, WI.

Hungarian+British +Canadian = American.
I’m an immigrant, a ‘legal alien’ from Canada, with Hungarian and British parents, living in the USA. I’m supremely aware of the fact that no one sees me as ‘immigrant’ because I’m white. I moved from a very visibly multi-racial large Canadian city to small-town, lily-white America. I worried about how I would teach my daughter about the joys of living in such a diverse community as I came from, but in the end, I needn’t have worried. We pass on to our children what is most important to us, never mind whether it is perceived as good or bad by others.

We’re one people on one planet.

Jedd Birkner,
Torrance, CA.

Race is a social construct. Prejudice is a way of expressing ignorance and fear. Senseless hatred is passed from generation to generation. I pray that the people in my country with hatred in their hearts for those they perceive as “the other” become a smaller and smaller minority with each generation. I grew up in a lily white suburb in the 1960’s. Race was something we saw on TV. I neighbor told me a racist joke once when I was around 5 years old. I repeated it to my father, a WWII vet. He told me in no uncertain terms that the language and sentiment I was repeating was not tolerated in our house. I am grateful to my father for that lesson. In my village there were two groups of blacks: the Jones family and the sons of the Nigerian ambassadors. I considered them blacks but I was on a first name basis with five of the six (the oldest Jones brother was an upper classman and, accordingly, I didn’t rate to be in his social group). I am grateful to live in California now in a diverse community. The differences make life interesting, learning about a bigger world. It pisses me off that so many people can be to ignorant and hateful still. Move on, idiots.

I raised my children color blind

Annette,
Houston, TX, .

I am white and I am weary of being included in a white subset of American original sin. The only original sin I have is biblical. I do not expect to be patted on the back for raising my children to be color blind. My children are 16 and 18. They truly do not see differences in the color of one’s skin. Racism is taught. They have not learned it our diverse city.

Lastly, my ancestors were Irish indentured servants. We did not own slaves. Many of us had not immigrate. Racism is multi level.
