Yes I’m blonde, don’t make assumptions
Melissa Villegas,
Temecula, CA.
From as far back as I can remember people assume that because I am blonde I have the most fun and have no brains. They seem to assume I am easy to pick-up and easy to make fun of. I cannot tell you how many “dumb blond” jokes I have heard in my years. I am picked on because I am blonde or I am not taken seriously because of my hair color. Not matter who we are people will make assumptions. It is easy to fall into the pigeon hole society attempts to place us in. We need to remind ourselves who we are on the inside and let that show on the outside. Skin, hair and eyes those just give us color in a dull world. Shine bright from the inside.

I do not bleach my hair.
I do not color my hair.
I do not highlight my hair.
I do not think about my hair.
I do not think with my hair.
Why am I called dumb because of my hair?
In 7th grade, I stopped talking in class. I stopped raising my hand, I stopped answering the teacher, I shut down. I got A’s & B’s in everything except class participation. Why? Because if I spoke up in front of the class and had the wrong answer, students and sometimes teachers would laugh and tell me I was dumb because of my hair color.
Color.
It’s a color.
Because of a color, I’m dumb.
Because of a color, I’m an object.
Because of a color, it’s ok to demean me, insult me, invalidate me, hate me.
Now that I have a son who has Aspberger’s Syndrome I know what is wrong. If you listen to enough blonde jokes you will notice that most of them have to do with a person (yes, “a blonde” is a person) taking what people literally to the extreme. Is it ok to make fun of people with disabilities who take things literally & who misunderstand what is said to them? No. But it IS still ok to make blonde jokes. Oh, it’s just a joke. Can’t you take a joke? Can’t you enjoy being called stupid for your entire life?
Blonde hair color, not intelligence level

With the stereotype of blonde’s being dumb, I enjoy proving this wrong with my high college GPA, hard work ethic, and confident personality.
She is just a dumb blonde

Blonde hair and blue eyes must mean no brains, right? Despite having a college education, being an avid reader, having an understanding of and experience teaching math and science, and having written published news features, I still have times when I am treated like my intelligence is less than others due to being a blonde woman.
I am not a dumb blonde

Everyone is put under a stereotype. However, people don’t understand that saying I am dumb because I am blonde is also putting me under a stereotype. My hair color doesn’t affect my intelligence. I can laugh at blonde jokes too, but my blonde hair does not define me.
