People say that “blondes have more fun,” but having light hair isn’t what it is cracked up to be. Many times I find myself at the receiving end of stigma when I have a “blonde” moment: dumb, human mistakes blamed on the color of my hair. These “blonde” moments then turn into judgement of my intelligence and my mental capacity usually being underestimated.

Though I don’t lose sleep over it, I hate being called a basic white girl. Just because I wear leggings, or am a greek woman, or even get the occasional Starbucks, Im not basic. Im not ditzy or dumb I hold a 3.4 GPA in college where I’m NOT here for my MRS degree.

The big insight happened when I couldn’t understand the language no matter how hard I tried, although it was English. Knowing it was deliberate. Realizing “This is what marginalized people feel all the time– knowing they are hated without anyone knowing their thoughts or feelings or who they are.”
Later I saw a nurse I knew who had quit. She asked how I could stay since it was “so horribly racial.” I was so dumb it didn’t occur to me to call it that. I kept thinking it was a fault in me and if I tried harder I could overcome it. I left and went back to school– a privilege of the middle class to get out of horrible situations.

About my whole life people teased me because I was Asian. I also hear people teasing other people to. People used to say “I’m smart because I’m Asian” and I told them it has nothing to do with being Asian, it is only my race. Asians aren’t born with a computer in there brain. I succeed because I try my hardest and I don’t give up. I practice over and over so I get better. People say they don’t have the time but you just have to make time for it or you just won’t succeed, you have to put time in to it or you will never get better. Good things happen to the those people that work there asses off and never gives up. As Babe Ruth says “It’s hard to beat a person that never gives up”. So just try you hardest and dont give up and just maybe you will be called Asian.
