The first time I heard this question, I thought it was funny. After hearing it a few times, it made me wonder. If my heritage is Mexican and I don’t know the first thing about making tortillas does that make me less of a Latina? So many times organizations I work with have tried to start the conversations about racism and social justice over ethnic potlucks. While I agree that sharing a meal brings people together, aren’t we more than just the food we eat?

Being profiled as someone who limits their food intake because of the way I look has been an ongoing issue for me since I lost 30 pounds, I have struggled with disordered eating and am recovering though not restricting. This comment makes me second guess myself and my recovery.

Years ago our family integrated a Predominantly Jewish neighborhood in New Haven, Connecticut. I am African-American. While walking our German shepherd, I was approached by an elderly woman who asked if she could ask a ‘personal’ question. It was the question submitted. For a moment, I was speechless, but then replied, ‘food, just like you.’ It has always intrigued me that people can live such insulated lives as to not realize that we are more alike than different.
