Diversity in race paints humanity’s story.

Flynn O’Sullivan,
Durham, NH

Each race carries its own rich history, traditions, and worldview, contributing unique colors to a portrait of broad human experience. It’s important to realize that diversity in a community can be something that is deeply enriching. We all come from some origin that is weighted with trials and tribulations, eventually blossoming into what we are now. It’s important to consider how we can continue to shape the present and bring together our shared origins and the fascinating cultural contrasts under our one roof of the humanity. It is up to us as a whole to determine the rest of the story for the human race, and what kind of lessons we want our chapter of the story to teach future generations. that control the rest of humanity’s story by honors both our shared origins and the fascinating cultural contrasts that shape our present. Differences in race and culture shouldn’t divide us, but rather expand our canvas on what it means to be human.

Discrimination still exists; whites always suspected!

Brian,
West Hills, CA.

To expand on those six words, I’d say that discrimination against people of color still exists, though often more subtle than it used to be (e.g., implicit bias). Still, the degree of discrimination is vastly underapreciated, especially by whites.

On the other hand, whites are always under suspicion for being racist, which is an exaggerated response to a real phenomenon (discrimination). In addition, racism is hardly limited to whites, though the concrete effects of racism coming from whites is greater than the effects of racism coming from others in this country.

Cascade Engineering Race Card Project

Cascade EngineeringPublished on May 16, 2012 by Mercedes Barragan
Inspired by Michele Norris, some very ambitious employees at Cascade Engineering wanted to know how its employees felt about race. We created race cards similar to the ones Norris uses and passed them out to employees at Cascade Engineering. Over 100 employees expressed their personal feelings around race in only six words. With their words we were able to create a unique story about Cascade Engineering from the perspective of its employees.

**Please note that this not a Cascade Engineering video production, but rather a creative project developed by it’s employees who are passionate about creating a safe, diverse and inclusive work environment for all people regardless of their race, color, sex, language, national origin, religion, economic status, orientation or age.
