He was a 3rd generation German-American farmer in middle America. He had one son in Europe and another son in the Pacific. Missouri citizen since birth. Their neighbor, Mr. Orr, Said then come with me to sell war bonds and it’ll make a difference. It did make a difference. In this instance the “race” was only propaganda from the Nazi party. This tidbit of history is still repeated as we recount our family history.

Growing up in rural MO there were no black people. I never heard a racist remark growing up, I never heard anything on the subject, period, not at home and certainly not at school. When I was a kid, (I’m 53 now) there was a black family that lived in town, briefly, Grandpa had them out to our farm, the two old men visited and I played with the kids. At the time I didn’t know how huge that was, I didn’t know that the rest of the community frowned on us, I didn’t know I was doing anything more than just playing with some kids. I remained just that naive throughout most of my life, only in the last few years have I begun to pay attention, to educate myself. Since George Floyd’s murder I have actively sought knowledge and understanding, I am learning.

Throughout the years it has been a bit difficult to understand the many emotions and stereotypes being of color and mixed. It is important to understand that how one is raised growing up in a complex world that continues to critique someone on the features or melancholy of their skin shouldn’t be acceptable. Someone being mixed doesn’t mean they’re going to act like one race over another. Some people even think because two different races become one resulting to an interracial relationship is bad. People think individuals from two different cultures coming together and do the unthinkable is confusing. People tend to push away things that they don’t understand. Thus people identify people with being confused about their identity. It baffles me that even as a child people constantly told me that I was “white washed” because I speak proper.
