My husband and I got married and adopted three beautiful children on the same day last summer. Happy times! I have learned more since these kids have arrived than I ever new possible. A same-sex parent family with trans racial kids draws a lot of attention both in the big city and in a rural Wal-Mart.

You see a lot of dancing in the social media spotlight and trends that are started. Either on TikTok or through dances created by rappers and trying to do copy them draws a lot of backlash. I jokingly try to do something and I always draw a response from my friends, “you’re too white too do that”, what determines the state of how white you are. I feel that we have the freedom to do something that makes us feel happy and not get negative comments.

Once open-minded, inclusive parents start to act nervous, different when cross-racial crushes develop & kids hit puberty.
Some parents change around Junior High.
All of above to some degree. More “oversight” of kids’ interaction. No more jokes about crushes. Group plans no more 1on1.
The changes are subtle. To the point one might think oneself paranoid or overreacting. But kids *get* the cool-it message.

Growing into my African heritage in America, I love to wear my hair how it naturally grows. I get the stares of disapproval but we all must remember i’m not here for your approval. Please, ask before you touch.

What’s it like being a Latina living the United States? It’s not always the most easiest thing. You have people coming up to you asking you if you can speak English. “Of course I can” I think to myself. What kind country do we will in where people are being judged every, single day. I will teach those people who doubted me that no matter what happens in my life I will never stop trying to succeed.
