The term American should represent the vast multitude of cultures, ethnic backgrounds, languages, complexions, origins and spiritual beliefs of its inhabitants. When those in power do not address the mistreatment of humans because their race is considered inferior, or choose to scrutinize and negatively profile individuals because of a difference in appearance, they are NOT practicing an American way. On behalf of the oppressed, forgotten, devalued, segregated, unappreciated and hated… America, we are your children too.

If skin color is the simply the product of birth, then why do I inherit the guilt associated with being white? I moved to Detroit at the age of 42. This is the most segregated region in the country. Why? Why are white people so hated here? I try to be friendly and chat like I would have in my west Michigan hometown, but I have learned “mixing” is inappropriate here.
