Carried by all, heavier for some.

Heather,
USA.

I wanted to emphasize that race is something we all have. Humans classify each other naturally, and as such we can all identify as one or more races, and others will also try to identify us regardless of whether we want them to or not. However, different races are treated very differently. Looking like you belong to one race can give you numerous privileges, such as access to better jobs, better pay, etc, while looking like you belong to other races can have the opposite effect. Race is something that is a part of us all, but it affects each of us differently, and it is crucial that we recognize these disparities in order to combat racial discrimination.

Self Identifying as Black

HeatherHeather,
Seattle, WA.

I grew up as a black female in the US and I’m happy with that. Why are we now expected to identify as African-American? Is this how the younger generation feels? I would love to hear their perspective. I think people should be able to self-identify as they decide is best for themselves. I identify as Black – including all the other mixtures of my heritage (which includes African, Mediterranean, Northern European, Southwest Asian, South African, and Native American).

Child of deaf mother, hearing world.

Heather,
Fishers, IN

If you have never heard about deaf culture, please go and read about it. Growing up the oldest child of a deaf mom, I never remembered learning sign. I didn’t know we were different. I didn’t know I was loud! I still don’t know when I am being loud. I love my mom. I am so glad that I had the ability to have the experience of another culture growing up.

Our daughters look like both of us

Heather,
CA

My husband and I have two beautiful daughters. Both of our girls have white skin, light brown hair, and brown eyes. When looking at them, others would assume they are white. My husband is Filipino/Italian and has dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes. I am white with blond hair and blue eyes. Our daughters look like both of us but took more of my traits. When we go to places, people often assume that he is not their father. There have been many times that people have asked if he adopted the girls, or bluntly asked if he is their “real dad.” It’s rude and disrespectful to our family. First, it is nobody’s business if a child has been adopted or not. Second, a “real dad” is any dad that is raising the children. Third, families come in all different colors, sizes, and parents.
