Black nurse fired for resisting injustice.

Elona,
Baltimore, MD

Black registered nurses face bullying and discrimination daily, primarily from non-Black colleagues. We are constantly made to feel inferior, despite our skills and dedication. The pressure to work harder and prove ourselves more capable than our counterparts is relentless. This inequity not only undermines our confidence but also creates a toxic work environment, where our professionalism and competence are continually questioned. It’s time for this mistreatment to be addressed, so we can be recognized and respected for the valuable contributions we bring to healthcare.

Judging ethnicity, denying individuality, perpetuates inequality

Vaibhav Dharmavaram,
Mission Viejo, CA

Judging Ethnicity: Racism involves making assumptions or forming opinions about individuals based on their ethnic background or cultural identity. This judgment often disregards personal attributes and reduces people to stereotypes. Denying Individuality: By focusing solely on ethnicity or appearance, racism strips individuals of their unique identities and personal experiences. It promotes the idea that all members of a particular ethnic group share the same characteristics, ignoring the diversity within groups. Perpetuates Inequality: Racism sustains social and economic disparities by systematically favoring certain groups over others. This inequality is embedded in institutions and policies, creating barriers to opportunities and perpetuating cycles of disadvantage. These words capture the destructive nature of racism and the importance of recognizing and addressing it to foster a more equitable society.

I can see and hear you

Hailey,

As a white woman in the United States I have learned to recognize my privilege. Growing up in a rural area has not exposed me to very much diversity, however I have learned how to be an ally and recognize the inequality in our country. I have had countless conversations about how to try to change this unfairness. I just want to make everyone know that they are seen and heard and we are making progress. I realize that the inequality in our country is unjust and should not even be an issue, but it is. We need to do more to fix it.

Privilege cripples; step out, run naked.

My truck isn’t allowed to go faster on the freeway because it’s yellow. Why should my skin color allow me any other benefit? Privilege is embarrassing. Inequality causes our society to stagger in a circle, never moving forward toward justice.

Inequality caused by fear and ignorance.

Maureen P. Shindle,
Mount Bethel, PA

I was married to a Black man who had to sit in the back of the bus and stick his hand through a hoke in the wall to buy a soda among many other insulting and degrading situations. His stories and those I have read about make me cry. I am ashamed of the death, destruction, disrespect and unChristian treatment by white Americans inflected upon people of color and those considered different. It breaks my heart and causes me great pain and distress. I pray that we are turning a corner, albeit very slowly.

I’m white but I still have a culture (Welsh and proud)

Katherine Davies,
Houston, TX.

I understand that racial inequality is a huge problem, has been for centuries and hopefully, will not exist centuries from now, but judging someone because of their race, their culture, whether they are black, white, hispanic, asian or anything in between. I get told all the time that white people don’t have culture, that I should just shut up and mind my own business, how dare I try to be accepting of any and every culture, including my own. I’m white, I’m American, I’m a girl. Even if I wasn’t a second-generation immigrant, no one has the right to say that someone can’t be proud of their own culture or that they don’t have one. Give me a break people, please.

It reminds me freedom is possible.

In a time that most people think of as a “post-civil-rights” era, in many ways, we are more tied up in injustice and inequality than ever. These images and sounds are a reminder that social justice looks like something more encompassing.
