Fake friends slandered my wife’s ethnicity.

Two different former friends put up hate speech about people of my wife’s ethnicity on the internet. They were directly confronted, given an opportunity to make it right and choose not to. I broke off both friendships. They actually needed my friendship much more than I needed theirs.

On the internet, nobody has race

I spent a lot of my misguided youth playing video games into the late hours of the night. It was how I found solace in times of pain or loneliness. Because you can’t see another person physically when playing games — only their avatar — you really can’t tell what race someone might be. Certainly you can make informed guesses based on things you might learn about them, their culture, or the language they speak, but nobody can know unless you tell them. Not having visual perception makes for interesting interactions. It highlights some of the inherent biological biases people have, and the fact that it is something we should strive to overcome.

From South Africa but not black?

I recently came to study in the United States and I am from South Africa. Since being here a lot of people have picked up on my accent and asked where am I from and I’d say South Africa and 9 times out of ten the next question would be how come you’re not black or that I am talking rubbish. This makes me question peoples understanding of the world that we live in and how they automatically assume that there are only black people living in South Africa and this is a bit irritating because we live in a world where we are not cut out of from the internet or news.

Being white in South Africa has no privilege as one would think, the whites are actually the minority and mostly blamed on because of the past. It is a rough place to be because people want to make it seem that the white people are responsible for everything bad that’s happened to the country and I personally love the place but it has forced me to move out and seek a better future for myself.

I wrote this six word memoir because people should know that no one should assume someone else’s ethnicity. I also wrote this six word memoir because most people that I encounter think of my ´race´ and tend to assume what ´race´ I am and sometimes question me about it or ask me about my ethnicity. I haven’t experienced much racism in my life but I have seen some people say racist comments at school or on the internet. I think that some people are racist because they don’t know what they are talking about so they assume things that they think are true. It is everyone’s job to make sure that people know that stereotyping is wrong and it needs to stop.

´There is only one race, The human race´

Race is not scientifically real, it is a social construct. One of the first people to categorize people with ´race´ was Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in 1776. He was a German scientist who categorized people into five different groups by their physical appearance, by where they were born, and their lifestyle.The five categories he put people into were Caucasian, Mongolian, Malayan, Ethiopian, And American.The American Anthropological Association says that during the 19th century people were put into a hierarchy and sorted people into categories by their ethnicity and were given different ranks on the hierarchy by their physical traits. This evidence shows that race is not real and that it is a man made idea. This proves that race is a manmade concept used to discriminate people and put them into groups. In conclusion, race is a completely wrong concept that has no scientific evidence of being real.

We cannot have honest productive discussions

Seeing as many careers have been derailed, some high profile other less so, because of a hypersensitivity around candidly discussing race, the nation is going to have tough road ahead. “Oppression olympics”, wherein arguments are weight in proportion to the professed suffering of the speaker, fueled by the mob power of the Internet, has Critical Race Theory in preposterous proportions to dominate mainstream conversation. When we have to fear blacklisting and social stigma for speaking our mind, there can be no fair examination of ideas, which makes our chances at finding truth remote, and hope for progress slim.
