Judah Philip Benjamin, QC (August 6, 1811 – May 6, 1884) was an American politician, lawyer, and slaveholder who served in cabinet level positions in the Confederate States of America, including Secretary of War and Secretary of State. It was a shock for me, a Jew, to learn that Benjamin and other Jews owned slaves and supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. Especially, because the story of the flight from slavery in Egypt is so central to Jewish life and practice.

Black in this world is a death sentence

Will all black-African Americans ever be given any breaks? Foreigners get better treatment in America than Blacks. Jews are looked at because of the holocaust. Blacks were kidnaped and brought here, but we get no retribution for being treated as animals. Even today, I tried to purchase a condo on the street and they took my money and called me within 45 minutes to say that unit had been sold, but the same model on the back was available. They didn’t want any blacks facing the street. There is still no equality at work or at home.

I was born because of racism.

In 1959, my mother was engaged to marry a man who wanted a black best man at their wedding. Even though my grandfather had made a point of drinking from “colored” fountains when the family drove south to Florida, this was–you could say–beyond the pale. “I can understand an old family retainer,” attending the affair, my grandmother had said. The families quarreled and the wedding was off. If they had gone through with it, I, of course, would never have been born.

It would be wrong to judge my family by something that happened so long ago. My mother still cries–and I do, too–remembering how she wasn’t allowed to invite a friend of color to her ninth birthday party. She always encouraged me to make friends of all races and nationalities.

The irony? We’re history’s most hated minority: Jews!

White privilege doesn’t work for Asians

We are told that the wealth and functionality of Whites and the poverty and dysfunction of non-Whites comes from “White privilege.” Yet it doesn’t work for Asians, who as a group are as wealthy as Whites. How did they overcome racism like that, and why did the Blacks not? The Jews are another example of a persecuted people who were not held back. In fact, as soon as they were emancipated, they became much MORE successful that the dominant group.. 29% of Nobel Prize winners have been Jewish.

Disagreeing with Obama makes me racist?

I am white but Jewish, and I grew up in a time when the Jews were barred from many many things because of our religion. My brother and I were the only Jews in our school and I was constantly chased around being called “dirty Jew” and “Christ killer” and told that my religion meant I was going straight to hell. Children wouldn’t sit next to me because they were afraid they’d end up in hell with me, that somehow my religious taint would rub off on them.

All this to say that I understand mindless discrimination and meanness in a special way. I therefore have approached my black friends, and I have striven to have many, with a depth of understanding many whites lack. I was simply crushed to be called a racist by African Americans who didn’t know me when I chose not to support President Obama. Crushed. Why treat your allies like that? I am not racist, never have been. But I am amazed at how short sighted and stupid we humans can be regardless of color.

I am happy to see that having an African American president has put things right for so many African Americans and I would never disparage that effect. But I’m not a racist.

White AND Jewish is challenging too.

I tend not to take negative comments about (race), religion or ethnicity personally (esp from children), but when I was teaching High School and didn’t take the day off on a Jewish Holiday (most of the other Jewish teachers and children did), my colleagues and students alike assumed that I was not Jewish (& with blonde hair/blue eyes and no NY-ish accent, I don’t necessarily fit the ‘Jewish-looking’ or ‘Jewish-sounding’ stereotypes). So it saddened me that over the course of the school day, I heard several anti-semitic comments from a handful of students and even one faculty member.

In the 1960’s all and only white countries opened their borders to massive non-white immigration. Then governments and media demanded we “mix together.” Now those same governments and medias are calculating that by the year 2040, there won’t be a single white majority nation left on the planet, and that this is a “good thing.” If this was done to all and only black countries, people would quickly recognize it for the genocide it is. But because I’m white, I’m a “naziwhowantstokill6millionjews.”
