Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s I truly believed that we had moved beyond racial conflicts. My greatest heroes, my most beloved singers and song writers, actors, activists and poets are people who’s skin is a different color than mine. I have never in my life filled out a race option with anything else but “human”. Daily, one should try to make a difference through their behavior towards everyone they come in contact with, treating each person with respect and kindness.

Black, White, Asian, or Pink with Purple polka dots – your skin color is not who you are. Do not obsess over the shade God painted you when you were born. Do not let history define you. Do not allow others to control your actions. Love, respect, kindness. Not hate and vengeance for past slights. We are not our ancestors. Not every white person is privileged, nor every black person oppressed. Racism can be found anywhere, perpetrated by any skin color, and will never go away. But individuals can rise above it. Follow your role models. Succeed in your life despite the naysayers. Overcome evil. Surround yourself with good people, regardless of their race. Do not self segregate yourself, but instead embrace diverse places, people, and experiences. You are not black. I am not white. We are all shades of brown. But most of all we are all human.

Don’t listen to those who push hate and division. But instead listen to your own conscience and work locally to make your immediate world a better place for yourself, your family, and your community.

Treat all people with respect, kindness.

My doctor of 10 years is on the 9200 block of Ferguson. He is black, I am white. I go to the area 1-2 times per month and am always treated with respect. I always bought gas at the QT that burned down and was treated like an old lady, doors held open, gave me their space in line, etc. A great, caring group of African-American people that ONLY erupted into violence because a racist white cop murdered a black, unarmed boy in broad daylight for jaywalking. The cop needs to go to jail for anything positive to come out of this situation. Period. This old, white lady is on the black folks of Ferguson’s side.
