I chose a black married mother, who works because I am. A lot of people do not know what it is like to be married and be able to juggle a job while having kids. I am law-enforcement so that is a very stressful job. Not to mention I am in college full-time which is another stressful job and I am a mother of five kids, which is the most stressful part of all so being a wife on top of all of that just makes it a little bit harder because you have to maintain my household for your family on top of everything else.

Tribalism is more divisive than race.

It is tribalism that leads to assumptions both affirming (they are like me, they accept me, I am safe with them) and disruptive (they don’t like us, we don’t trust them, they are different). Tribalism perpetuates white privilege, empowers classism – which is informed and compounded by racism and sexism – collectively absolves abuse, fosters narrow concepts of community, amplifies distrust and fear, fuels separatist desire, and validates misconceptions. Too often, empathy ends at the tribal boundary. One reason those who choose bias over acceptance rebuke science is because modern science no longer categorizes humans by race, but by ethnic groups. Race is concept too easily institutionalized to enforce classist agendas. Ethnicity is closer in tone to cultural specificity. Consider the existence of tribes and how they might reinforce perceptions and attitudes toward race; law enforcement, political parties, families, neighborhoods, churches, hobbyists, etc. If your tribe insists on attributing all characteristics (positive and negative) to race, how likely is it that you will too? Unless you choose not to.

Blacks can own nice things too!

My six words is relevant to a personal story of mine and other minorities. The stereotype is that Blacks are poor and lack education so commit illegal crimes to obtain the luxuries we want. Because of this stereotype, people are oblivious to the fact that we are capable of working hard for the expensive cars, homes, and electronic devices we want. I can remember on my tenth birthday, my mother went to Best Buy and bought me a brand new T.V. She had been planning to buy this gift for me that I had been wanting for a while and had worked hard at her job to save up for it. To her disbelief, the cops stopped her while the T.V was boxed up and wrapped in the backseat of the car. They stopped her on the assumption that she stole the T.V despite my mother showing them the receipt for it. They had taken her to court and after 30 minutes or so, she was let go. Coming home to me on my birthday with anger from the injustice of the police officers that day had such a negative effect on me. That was when I first began to have negative feelings towards cops and the law enforcement system.
