Because I’m balck I’m a threat

Zuanisha Jones,
Winchester, VA

I’m Zuanisha. I am from NJ currently in Winchester VA and attending Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown VA. I am a black woman and when I go onto a retail store or any store I feel like I am watched and followed. I am there to shop I am not there to steal or hurt anyone I would love to be looked at the same. I am a single mother and I would never risk anything from me being a mother. I am a black woman in America and I would love to be trusted until proven other wise.

Our global motivations are innately similar.

As I travel the world, I have found one truth: we are all innately equal in our drives and desires. We are driven by love and survival. We want the best for our families. We want to feel loved and have the opportunity to love. That’s it. That is the place we start. Not from our differences, but what makes us the same. The human condition is more powerful than our facades. If we can start from our collective human similarities, we collaborate and we win. If we start conversations and interactions with what makes us different and “other,” we judge…and lose before we begin. Change perceptions and you change reality.

We strive for the same things.

This man has your daughter

Karen Button,
Middletown, CT.

Phone call from the neighborhood grocer – followed by my husband on the line asking me to come down to the corner store to verify that he was in fact the father of our bi-racial infant daughter since they were used to seeing me with her and were refusing to let him leave the store with her. location: 1983 suburb of Boston

Cracker? You burnt piece of toast!

Patti Bear
Middletown, DE

This was a exchange when I was in 5th grade, over a call in a kickball game. I know now what I was supposed to call my friend after she called me a cracker but I thought she was making fun of my white face with freckles so I responded with a comparison of her skin. Her response? She laughed so hard she fell down and we remained friends the rest of the school year. This was in 1962 and I was one of two white kids in the class. We moved to the suburbs a couple of years later. My junior high school was all white, but my high school was 50/50. I was the president of the bi-racial committee and vice-president of the student body. Enjoyed both activities and loved high school. Felt more at home in Norview High School.
