This six word race-card projects reflects on the common misconception or stereotypes that Arab women who wear the hijab face. Often times people of another race assume Arab women that wear the hijab are oppressed, when in reality it is a choice to follow our faith, identity, and individuality.

Being located in Eastern Europe, there is a common misconception that Romania comes from slavic lineage, when historically, and factually we are Latin people. Most Romanians have many Middle Eastern features as well and many people associate Romanians with being gypsies. Western European countries are quite negative and borderline racist when it comes to romanians specifically.

Race is a classification system based on physical traits, such as skin color, made up in an attempt to claim superiority. We are all members of the same species whose genetic material is over 99% the same. Each group of us living in different parts of the world, exposed to different environmental conditions. This has led to unique gene pools causing the differences that were used to make up the idea of race…no more no less. Now considering the above thoughts doesn’t racism seem like the most ignorant all misconceptions in the world!
