I’m trying to be a better human. Some days go well. Other days not so much. It’s not as if I have a score card to keep track. But in the moment- sometimes after the fact, I realized a person to person encounter was less than what it should have been or could have been. I fumble. And I hope I can be better moving forward.

My people have believed they are superior for as long as I’ve known. Not only is it frustrating that my race fails to see others as equal but the fact that even after all my people have done they still can’t see how they’ve impacted the lives of other races. Seeing the struggles of other races just makes me wonder how most white people can’t see their advantages in life. I feel like my people need to wake up and see the real world. I hate how when I’m looked at by a person of color I’m perceived as racist.

Everyone always says your white you get everything but really you white people don’t get everything they want. In reality white people are trying to make up there mistakes well most. If we keep trying soon this wont even be a problem.

I’m ashamed of my white privilege.

I want to be an ally but I’m scared to make hurtful mistakes. I want to learn how to speak up for others without speaking over others.

Lines exist only when we differentiate.

We will reach the point of true equality in this country when, rather than saying “I’m black” and “I’m white”, we recognize that we are all flawed people who make mistakes. This doesn’t mean we can’t recognize and celebrate our differences; we just need to focus on the fact that we are all more alike than different. Lines in the sand can be erased–they aren’t required to exist.

The whites are still to blame.

I grew up in Texas. I always had people telling me that Caucasian people were better than any other race. Being told that always made me feel guilty. When we learned about the KKK in school I always felt uncomfortable like all of the African Americans were staring at and blaming me for others mistakes. To this day when the topic of race comes up I feel guilty for being Caucasian.
