I will not deny that race continues to reek extreme havoc on modern day social order. I see it every day at my high school, in the news, and even on the billboards lining the highway. We can all say that we ‘don’t see color’, but in reality, there are not many truly color blind people in the world. Most of us can’t help resorting to stereotypes the instant we see someone who is not a member of our race.

But this does not mean that we are all racist. Today, many think in black and white and generally tend to emphasize the licentious tendencies of human character. But we are not inherently evil, and if we work together to break down the barriers between the peoples of the world that have stood for centuries, we can make peace with who we all are.

Just a quick message: In our society of modern day times I am immensely judged for being Hispanic and a women. As children we are always encouraged to dream big and live towards those big dreams. However, as I grew older there were a lot of individuals (teachers, friends, family members, colleagues, etc.) that looked down upon me and tried to discourage my dreams, whether it was graduating high school, going to a university college, or anything in general. They discriminated me because of my race and economic situations in my personal life that they thought I wasn’t capable of getting higher onto a platform. There comment were derogatory and insulting that at times I would let it bring me down, however I was determined to prove a point and teach a lesson.

I am the modern day slave

About ten years back, I was hiking Mt. Cascade in upstate NY, when I encountered a family of four on the same excursion. Mom & Dad, two kids, a boy and girl in their early teens. Mom was a fit 30-something, and Dad was overweight, wearing knee braces, huffing and puffing. I instantly came to realize that the middle age, middle class white male has become the modern slave, sacrificing everything for that most elusive “perfect middle class lifestyle”. Now, with two kids in college, I have come to the next reality. My kids are smart, but not smart enough to get a scholarship. They have classified learning disabilities, but nothing that qualifies for any aid. I’m not rich, but I have too much to get a break on loans. In other words, I’m the guy paying full fare, while the upperclassmen who tour my kids around the campus point out where the “Tutorers can be found. When I decide to stop being our societies “cash cow”, exactly where are the rest going to get their funds from? “After the revolution…”, as one of my former professors once put it.
