I am a caucasion female, brown hair with brown eyes and my husband is proudly Hispanic/Mexican. We were pulled over at a checkpoint one evening on or way home from a family event and when the officer looked in the car, he asked me, “Ma’am, are you being held against your will?” I was shocked–why goes it have to be something negative or a crime because I am white and he is Hispanic.

Where are you from? It’s a loaded question in that I could answer where I was born, where I was raised, where I live currently, or from which country does my family hail. Well, I’m a bit of a “mutt” actually because I am a conglomerate of many immigrants of many nations, but most notably English, Irish, Scottish, Canadian, Welsh, Swedish, Native American, but many just call me “White boy.” True, my family has come from all over, but I am a sixth generation California with ancestors dating back to the Pony Express in Northern California since 1870. I may be just another white boy or “mutt,” but that is Mr. “Mutt” to you!

I say I’m black because that is how I identify myself. It’s just that simple. I say I’m beautiful because for many years in my childhood, I thought I was ugly. No one ever said I was, but how I was treated, discriminated against because of my skin color, the diversity of my hair, even the scar on my forehead, made me feel that way. I say that I’m proud because I now has self pride, not in a conceited way but in a healthy, respectful toward others of all different cultures, way. I don’t hold myself above anyone, but I won’t be put down by anyone either. I love who I am, who God made me to be. I want to enjoy every minute of it.

I’m not really offended by anything people say for the most part. Could be for a number of reasons. Could be the fact that I live in Southern California, or maybe because people don’t know/don’t care what ethnicity I am. But I know one thing for sure. I am Japanese and break all stereotypes out there. I am not the best student. Math is definitely one of my worst subjects. I do eat rice every day, however, I am mediocre at best while using chopsticks. My driving isn’t terrible, but my significant other begs to differ. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoy my ethnic background and embrace it whenever someone’s curiosity peaks and they gain the courage to ask. I am blessed at the fact that I do not live in an area with much racial profiling or discrimination, I do know that it is still very much prevalent.
